Dr Austin graduated from University of Birmingham in 1992 and trained in gastroenterology and later hepatology in the Trent region and the Liver Transplant Unit at Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham. He gained a PhD from University of Nottingham in 2004.
He has been closely involved in developing dedicated high quality services for patients with gastrointestinal disease in Derby since his appointment in 2004. He has been the Lead Clinician since 2004 and has continued in that role since the merger with Queens Hospital Burton.
General gastroenterology with particular interest in diseases of the liver including non-alcoholic fatty liver with the ability to offer liver stiffness measurement (elastography). Further special interests include diseases of biliary system and pancreas with ability to offer both endoscopic ultrasound and ERCP interventions to investigate dyspepsia, and abdominal pain including post-cholecystectomy.
Outpatient consultation, liver elastography, gastroscopy, flexible sigmoidoscopy, endoscopic ultrasound and ERCP with the full range of therapeutic procedures including oesophageal and duodenal stenting. Dr Austin no longer undertakes colonoscopy.

Dr Austin runs an active research programme and is the East Midlands Clinical Research Network Hepatology lead. He is the Principal Investigator for five NIHR studies open in Derby at present and hopes to see several trial of therapy for non-alcoholic fatty liver disease open here next year.
