Profile:

Mr Sharp is an established ENT /Head & Neck Surgeon, with 19 years as a Derby Consultant. He is the Derby/Burton Thyroid Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) Lead, also incidentally the Derby Thyroid audit, clinical governance and research Lead. He is also the ENT departmental admin Lead Clinician.

Mr Sharp is thoroughly trained in all aspects of ENT, including paediatrics, with his special interest being malignant and benign head & neck surgery, including laryngeal, parotid and thyroid pathology. However, he is one of few clinicians offering combined approach tympanoplasty surgery in the Midlands.

He is very keen on clinical outcomes especially Cumulative Sum (CUSUM) indicators and holds on-going  (19+) years of personal audit data for 3 key ENT operations and, using this data, has published papers/posters and presentations in parotidectomy, thyroidectomy and post major laryngeal/pharyngeal surgical outcomes.

He is an Otolaryngology part III Intercollegiate Specialty Board Examiner, European Board Diploma in Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery Examiner and visiting Professor to the Department of Otolaryngology University Kuala Lumpa, Malaysia (Part 1 Surgery Examination).

Mr Sharp  teaches on the Midlands Ear and National Basic Surgical Skills Courses. He has published over 50 medical papers and three book chapters and participated in several Radio Derby ENT Phone-in programmes.

Within the last three years he has been an invited advisor for two NCEPOD studies.

He holds a Bronze Clinical Excellence Award.

Over the last decade he has participated in four Ear Camps in rural Nepal.

Reflecting his surgical specialism, Mr Sharp’s research has predominantly been clinical based, especially in the field of clinical outcomes. (CUSUM). He is also interested in surgical anatomy. Multiple examples of his published papers can be found online (using for example, the Pub Med search engine)

Special interests:

A comprehensive service in the field of medicolegal litigation having established noise induced and clinical negligence expetise.
